Staff of The Octagon Theatre & Westlands take a look at our Spring/Summer Season Brochure to let you know what they’re most looking forward to.
Sean Welsh, Operations Manager
I am excited about the new shows we are getting with Westlands Entertainment Venue; we have some amazing shows at The Octagon, however with the way the building is laid out we are unable to have standing gigs and real ale festivals. I have been a fan of shows like Disco Heaven since working for a previous venue back in 2009 and so I know how much fun they can be. And you will defiantly be able to find me at the Yeovil Beer Festival.
Dave Perry, Technician
It's not very often when working in the technical department that you stop and take a look at the shows that will be entering through our scene dock doors in the months to come. When I do however, I'm struck by the sheer variety of shows and start to think of the interesting job the technical team will have bringing these show to fruition. Some of the shows I'm looking forward to this season are many of the stand-up comedians such as Jon Richardson & Chris Ramsey. I'm especially eager to work the first sold out comedy night at the new Westlands venue. There is nothing quite like sitting in a room with the energy of 800+ people as they collectively erupt into laughter. Looking forward towards Christmas I cannot wait for the next pantomime season to start with Cinderella. This is many of the technicians’ favourite time of year, where we get to be especially creative to make a spectacular show for families to enjoy.
Sally Matthews, Box Office Team
I am looking forward to bringing my 4 year old great niece to the brilliant children’s productions, Northern Ballet’s Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Mister Maker and a new one CBeebies’ Sid’s Show, which looks exciting. For me the comedy-drama Hysteria looks good on its National tour, plus Collabro and Moya Brennan the Voice of Clannad. I’m looking forward to seeing some of our Encore and Interactive Screenings at Westlands too.
Charlie Wood, Front of House Team
I’ve already got tickets for Henning Wehn, he is my favourite comedian – I first saw him at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 2009 and haven’t missed a show of his since. I’m really excited to be seeing him in a bigger venue with even more room for laughs. I’m also excited to see the Sons Of Pitches again; their show here last year was hilarious and so musically diverse; they’re incredibly talented. It’s also just after my birthday so happy birthday to me! Priscilla Queen of the Desert will be a great one to watch. I’ve never seen the musical on stage but love the film and was blown away by Motiv8’s production of Starlight Express last year so I’m sure it’ll be fantastic. I also think the Poptastic show will be great fun – something very different for us here but sure to be an absolute blast and a chance to relive my youth with some cheesy pop classics.
Hannah Lury, Marketing Officer
What I love about this season (and brochure) is that it’s bursting at the seams with amazing event after amazing event. At Westlands I think I’m most looking forward to Poptastic (SClub were the first band I ever saw live so it'll be great to see them performing live in Yeovil!) and the stunning Encore Screenings which mean we can welcome even more dance, drama and opera into Somerset. At home at The Octagon I’m really excited to see Jon Richardson (for me he’s still the funniest comic I’ve seen here) and then later in the season the beautiful Jazz Dance Company who always promise a wonderfully creative and inspiring show. Then with December comes our stunning new pantomime Cinderella; having seen the production last year in readiness for our run I have to say that this is definitely going to be our most spectacular panto yet. The sets and costumes alone are the most dazzling I’ve seen and, as ever, there are a few surprises in store too!
Denise Jackson, Box Office Team
I am really looking forward to going to see the Interactive Screening of To Kill a Mockingbird – firstly it is one of my favourite books, and secondly it’s being screened at our new venue Westlands!
Louise Field-Rowe, Westlands Front of House Manager
Having missed seeing Jasper Carrott at Camp Bestival last summer I am very much looking forward to seeing him at The Octagon Theatre. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favourite novels from my school days so will be a delight to watch this at the brand new Westlands Entertainment Venue. I also know a little boy that is very excited about going to see Justin’s Party!
